Take an unprecedented look inside the Nation’s largest hospital devoted to clinical research, where treatments are tested for the first time in people. After a year of filming patients, families and researchers, Discovery channel will be presenting “First in Human,” an inside look at the NIH Clinical Center.
Starting tomorrow at 9 p.m. ET, watch the stories of courageous patients unfold as they work with NIH’s dedicated researchers to find new and better ways to treat some of the world’s most challenging diseases.
Airing on three Thursday evenings, August 10, 17, and 24, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery, First in Human is narrated and executive produced by Emmy®, Golden Globe®, and Critics Choice® winning actor Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory,” “Hidden Figures”), in collaboration with John Hoffman (“Weight of the Nation,” “Sleepless in America”).
One of the researchers profiled in the documentary is Senior Investigator Dr. John Tisdale, a hematologist in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. Tisdale has spent his career researching sickle cell disease (SCD), an inherited disorder in which curved blood cells block blood flow. It can cause severe pain, organ damage and death. The documentary follows Tisdale and patients with SCD who come to the NIH Clinical Center for experimental bone marrow transplants.
