How People Appraise a Heat Stimulus Affects How Their Autonomic Nervous Systems Respond To It, Study Finds

How a person perceives and evaluates stimuli involving actual or prospective pain is an important component in the autonomic nervous system’s (ANS) response to such stimuli, according to a study conducted by researchers in the Intramural Program of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). The study, conducted by researchers in the Section on Affective Neuroscience and Pain at the National Institutes of Health’s Clinical Center, was published in the journal Pain.

New Insights on Pain and Opioid Use in People With Sickle Cell Disease After Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant

A collaborative intramural study cofunded by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and three other agencies at the National Institutes of Health offers new information on pain in sickle cell disease, the use of opioids for this pain, and psychological and quality-of-life challenges faced by people with this disease. The study was reported in a research letter in the British Journal of Haematology.

A Potential Anticancer Drug From Poppies Has Been Produced in Genetically Engineered Yeast

Researchers from Stanford University and collaborating institutions have successfully synthesized noscapine, a potential anticancer drug, in yeast cells. This research, which was partially supported by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, was published in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

New Funding Opportunities

New Administrative Supplement for Existing NIH Grants

NCCIH is cosponsoring, along with 20 other NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices a new supplement sponsored by the National Institute on Aging. NOT-AG-18-008 “Alzheimer's Disease and its related Dementias (AD/ADRD)" is a focused administrative supplement for NIH grants that are not focused on Alzheimer's disease” (https://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-AG-18-008.html). For clarity, this supplement is a call for administrative supplements to applications to expand existing awards that are not currently focused on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and its related dementias (ADRD) to allow them to develop a new focus on AD/ADRD.

NOTE: Please review and consider the following points in the work you propose in your administrative supplement(s) application:

To be within the scope of the research or training that is already supported in your existing grant.
Center awards and resource awards are most likely to be able to justify these supplements as they tend to have a broad content scope.
Some research grants will also qualify if the current research is on a related topic (e.g. cognitive decline in aging, caregiving, or health disparities).
Individual requests cannot exceed $250,000 in direct costs (exclusive of Facilities and Administrative costs on sub-contracts).

DUE DATE: Administrative supplement requests must be received by June 8 for funding in FY 2018. Investigators should submit applications as responses to the parent active administrative supplement PA.

NIH Requests Input on Geroscience Issues

This Request for Information (RFI) asks non-governmental groups (e.g., researchers, disease and aging patient advocacy organizations, professional societies, and others), to provide input into the planning for a future Geroscience Summit, designed to explore the contributions that geroscience can make to relieving the burden of chronic diseases and their impact (e.g., loss of resilience and frailty). Responses to this RFI will help the National Institutes of Health (NIH) GeroScience Special Interest Group (GSIG) to better understand the goals of diverse non-governmental organizations, and how discussions and collaborations around the topic of geroscience (facilitated by the Summit) can help all interested parties accelerate their research-related activities.
