Respiratory Syncytial Virus Challenge Study

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a contagious virus that causes the common cold. However, RSV can cause serious and life-threatening lung infections in children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. In our study, we will give a dose of RSV in the nose and study how a healthy adult responds. What we learn from this study may allow us, and other researchers, to test new medicines and vaccines for RSV.

Who can participate?

You may be eligible if you are:
  • 18-50 years old
  • Healthy and non-smoking
  • Willing to use birth control
  • Living within 300 miles of the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland

What does the study involve?

This study requires hospitalization at the NIH Clinical Center for approximately 1-2 weeks. You will return again for 2 or 3 outpatient study visits in the 2 months following the RSV dose. During the hospitalization, doctors and nurses will see you daily. You will receive a single dose of RSV in your nose. You will also have blood tests and nasal rinses on a regular basis while you are in the hospital. You will remain in your room during your hospital stay, but there are no activity limitations after going home.

Where is the study taking place?

The study will take place at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The NIH campus is accessible by car and public transportation. Transportation and other expenses may be covered for eligible participants.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for participating in this study. All study-related medical care, including the hospitalization, outpatient clinic visits and procedures, are provided free of charge.

Will I receive payment of some kind?

Participants will be compensated for time and may be reimbursed for travel.
